"The idea of serving and learning at the same time is great. It creates an environment in which learning can affect all of who you are, not simply one aspect. What you learn in the classroom brings insight to the workplace, and the daily, practical experiences of service imbue book learning with life."
- Christine, Eastern College (IPSL Guayaquil, Ecuador, program)
In May 1999, at its annual meeting, the IPSL Board of Trustees approved a plan to invite selected colleges and universities around the world to form local IPSL chapters, to be named Distinguished Partners, and to award annually the International Certificate for Distinguished Service-Learning to students and community agencies. The Distinguished Partner Program was designed to further the initiation and development of service-learning and international/intercultural education in institutions of higher education around the world and to link institutions committed to the values and practice of service-learning in an international network.
In November, 2007, the IPSL Board of Trustees authorized a new Membership Program to replace the Distinguished Partner Program, making available to a broader network of institutions an opportunity to join with each other and with IPSL in the work to advance the use of service-learning and intercultural education. Membership is open to all institutions of higher education and related organizations with a commitment to international service-learning. Note that Members will be invited to submit nominations for the International Certificate for Distinguished Service-Learning, which had been a key feature of the Distinguished Partner Program. See below for a list of a list of certificate recipients from 2000-2007.
