Service-Learning Program in Adelaide, Australia
Study Abroad integrated with Volunteer Service
Deeper, More Meaningful Study Abroad
The University of Adelaide is located in the cultural heart of Adelaide, the capital
city of South Australia. All four of the University’s campuses are located on the lands
of the Kaurna People, the traditional owners for thousands of years prior to the beginning
of European settlement in 1836. The University’s main campus is situated in the center
of Adelaide’s thriving activity, with its sandstone campus bordered by the Art Gallery of
South Australia, the State Library of South Australia, the South Australian Museum,
the Central Business District and the River Torrens – an ideal location for local and
international students alike.
Known for its pleasant Mediterranean climate, thriving economy, dynamic cultural
scene and affordable cost of living, Adelaide offers an enviable lifestyle in an
environment that is ideal to visit and study. Adelaide has a high standard of living
at a relatively low cost in comparison to its East coast counterparts. It is an attractive,
friendly, safe and well-planned city of wide streets and boulevards, squares, parklands
and a mixture of historic and modern buildings.
With a population of 1.1 million, Adelaide is Australia’s fifth largest city, with all
of the convenience of a major city, but with few of the hassles. The city has welcomed
migrants from all over the world and is characterized by a great diversity of
cultural traditions, languages spoken (although English is the official language)
and systems of belief.
Known as the 20-minute city, Adelaide is easy to get around thanks to its well
planned streets and public transport network, which provides concessions for
students. Its central location makes it an ideal gateway to explore South Australia’s
many attractions, from world-renowned wineries, beautiful hills and rugged
coastlines to the Australian outback.
With more than 130 years of excellence in education, the University of Adelaide
is one of Australia’s oldest and most influential tertiary institutions. Since its
establishment in 1874, the University has developed a reputation for brilliance in
teaching, learning and research. The University is associated with five
Nobel Prize winners, has produced 102 Rhodes Scholars and 104 Fulbright Scholars,
and is a member of the Group of Eight – Australia’s leading research intensive universities.
In Australia, IPSL offers intensive, five week sessions in July.
