IPSL 2011 Symposium in Siena, Italy: A History of Acceptance & Hospitality

Siena has an extraordinary history of SERVICE, a tradition that still regulates the lives of Sienese people and their devotion to service. Art gives us wonderful examples of this..let's just think about the Hospital "Santa Maria della Scala". The Hospital was constructed on the Via Francigena, just opposite the cathedral and was one of the earliest European examples of in-patient hospital care, with its own autonomous organization. Inside the Santa Maria della Scala, the Pellegrinaio frescoes illustrate for us the many functions of the hospital: the care of the sick, the care for the poor, the education of abandoned children and the reception of the pilgrims who found shelter here during their journey along the Via Francigena. Other institutions in Siena share a similar history like for example the Misericordia where some IPSL students do their service-learning volunteer work.

The biennial IPSL Symposium is a valuable gathering of the top scholars and scholar-practitioners of international Service-Learning™ around the world. Hence, our conference provides a very unique professional development opportunity for all who attend.

Cost: US$346 (Registration includes full access to all Symposium session and plenary, Welcome Dinner on Wednesday evening November 9th in Siena, lunches on Thursday and Friday, all coffee breaks and snacks, evening shuttles to/from Siena centre, night walking tour of Siena, Siena Italian Studies Site Visit, and all taxes. Accommodation is extra and it includes breakfast. The only meals not covered are dinner on Thursday and Friday nights.)
