We Have Winners!

IPSL is proud to announce the WINNERS of our second annual STUDENT PHOTO CONTEST!

Students submitted images in five categories:

  • Service Placements
  • Home stays and Campus Life
  • Community Experience
  • Landscapes and the Environment
  • Travel and Excursions

and the judging team selected one first prize and one honorable mention in each category.  This year's judges were: Adam Dedman, our Program Director from Chiang Mai; Rosa Costantino, the IPSL Director of Finance and Administration and Faith Cathcart, an IPSL alum from our Guadalajara Program and a professional staff photographer from the Oregonian Newspaper. We had many lovely submissions that we will be proud to use for our promotional materials. Thank you all and keep taking photos for next year's competition - you could be a winner!

SERVICE PLACEMENT CATEGORY

First Place - Dan O'Brien - "Colorful Shirts" - Kolkata, India. Caption: Every morning part of my service included laying out wet clothes to dry in the hot Kolkata heat.

 

Honorable Mention - Dan O'Brien - "Best Friend" - Kolkata, India. Caption. Street scene captured right outside my service placement.

 

HOMESTAYS AND CAMPUS LIFE CATEGORY

First Place - Bri Fowler - "Mama Mia!" - Siena, Italy. Caption: My host mother was the most phenomenal cook. She was so generous as well....I think what made it taste so good was the love she put into preparing every meal.

 

Honorable Mention - Bri Fowler - "Friendship Fourishing in the Piazza del Campo" - Siena, Italy. Caption: ...on a normal day, before the tourists arrived, the Campo was filled with Italian students studying, families taking some time to relax , and friends sharing a good laugh together.

 

COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE CATEGORY

First Place - Dan O'Brien - "Durga Puja Submersion" - Kolkata, India. Caption: During the submersion ceremony of the goddess Durga into the river...people from all walks of life come together during this special time of year.

 

Honorable Mention - Bri Fowler - " The Little Things that Make Childhood so Sweet" - Siena, Italy. Caption: During the weeks leading up to Lent, there is Carnivale. Every Sunday, you will find familiesrelaxing together in the Piazza del Campo and children playing with confetti and running across the cobblestones.

 

LANDSCAPES AND THE ENVIRONMENT CATEGORY

First Place - Dan O'Brien - "Trains" - Kolkata, India.  Caption: Trains are the best way to get around India and one of the most beautiful ways to travel.

 

Honorable Mention - Dan O'Brien - "Kathmandu Temple" - Nepal. Caption: There was a mixture of the tourist, the local and the spiritual.

 

TRAVEL AND EXCURSIONS CATEGORY

First Place - Dan O'Brien - "These Boots were Made for Walking" - Kolkata, India.   Caption:  My mother had traveled in Europe when she was my age and she had taken a picture like this in the Swiss Alps. I was hiking with some new firendsa and decided I would follow in her footsteps.

 

Honorable Mention - Dan O'Brien - "Mishti!" - Kolkata, India. Caption: Of all the different things I ate in India, nonw were as different or delicious as the syrupy, sweet deserts known as Mishti. I may go back to India just to eat these again!
