Experience London from a Local Perspective

With a rich history dating back to Roman times, London is a modern, cosmopolitan cultural center and a hub for the latest artistic and intellectual trends. On the banks of the River Thames, London is home to the British Museum, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, The National Gallery, the Tower of London, the rebuilt Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and hundreds of other historic sites. This bustling city has dozens of unique neighborhoods, an abundance of museums, cafes, clubs and restaurants, and features thriving theatre and music scenes. With over 350,000 students from all over the world, the city makes for a vibrant learning experience.

As the world’s most cosmopolitan city, London offers a fantastic diversity of population and supports a myriad of different lifestyles. Throughout history, immigrants and refugees have been arriving in London and forming pockets, and today, Londoners are as varied as the city itself. More than one in three Londoners are from an ethnic minority group; nearly one-quarter of London residents were born outside the UK; and more than 200 languages are spoken. London is frequently likened to a collection of villages with distinctive characteristics. Soho has a predominantly Chinese community; Spitalfields, and its famous Brick Lane curry restaurants, is home to a huge Bangladeshi population; Green Lanes has Greek and Turkish communities; and the large Caribbean presence in London is evident at the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street festival.

Despite the size of the city, travel is usually straightforward with underground, bus, and train networks. From London, it is easy to travel to other parts of Britain, France, and all the major centers of Europe.

Housing

You will live in university residence halls among British and international students on one of the campuses of Roehampton University. These are self-catering residences where you may cook your own meals, or you may purchase meals in the cafeteria. Occasionally, students are assigned accommodations with a meal plan, for which an additional fee is charged.
