"My service-learning experience was exceptionally rewarding. My classes and my work at the service agency related very well to each other. I am forever grateful to my professor who made me value different opinions. I found the experience extremely important and relevant to my life and life in general, and often find myself reflecting back on class sessions and service work I did."
-Tammy, St. Paul's College
The program is based at Roehampton University, located on a beautiful campus next to the Richmond Park area of London. With their newly opened Crucible Centre, Roehampton University is becoming well known as a center for social justice / human rights education and research. The student body, with whom you will be working, studying, and developing friendships, comes from all over Great Britain and Europe.
During the semester, you will take one required course and two electives, for a total of 12-15 credits. A transcript is issued by Roehampton University upon successful completion of the program.
Students engage in a special service-learning course related to their volunteer service, in which they meet regularly with a British faculty member to reflect on, explore, examine and analyze the issues of the larger society and culture. In particular, students will think critically about issues of citizenship and social rights in the context of the British welfare state. You will write a journal, a critical incident paper, a case study of your service agency, and a concluding paper connecting your service experience and academic learning.
