AFS-USA (formerly the American Field Service), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a leader in intercultural learning and offers international exchange programs in more than 40 countries around the world through independent, nonprofit AFS Organizations, each with a network of volunteers, a professionally staffed office, and headed up by a volunteer board.

AFS has been exchanging students throughout the world for more than 65 years. That’s six decades of history and experience in international education with an exemplary record of safety, security, and service to students, parents, and educators.

IPSL is proud of our strategic partnership with AFS-USA Intercultural Programs.

IPSL's international service-learning programs provide AFS-USA alumni with the opportunity to study and serve abroad as undergraduate or graduate students and receive college credit in the process. This valuable alliance brings together two venerable organizations with a shared history of working to promote student learning and global citizenship through international exchange.

AFS-USA alumni receive preferential admissions consideration for all IPSL international service-learning programs and a wavied application fee for IPSL programs.

AFS-USA alumni also receive automatic scholarships when they apply and are accepted into an IPSL graduate program of their choice. Read more at

Up with People  is a unique semester-long study abroad experience that combines elements of International Education, Service Learning, and Performing Arts. Up with People participants come from 15-20 countries, and travel together as a group, visiting 17-20 cities on at least two continents.  Participants stay in host families in each city they visit, providing an opportunity to learn first-hand about the local culture and community.  Each visit is one week in duration, and includes multiple community service projects (1000 hours collectively in each city), as well as educational tours, speakers, and lectures.  At the end of each week, participants put on a two-hour musical show featuring a combination of international hits and original Up with People music.  Musical talent and/or experience are not a requirement for the Up with People program.

Programs begin in January and July of each year.  Financial aid awards are applicable to the Up with People travel experience and participants can receive a full semester of college credit.
