In the Galapagos, you will volunteer approximately 15 hours a week in a local service agency, development or conservation organization. Your service may include volunteer work in:

Volunteer Service Examples

Following are examples of agencies where IPSL students have served in the past or may be able to serve. Other service placements may be available. Your placement will be determined by community and agency needs, as well as your interests, goals, and skills (including Spanish language ability).


Charles Darwin Foundation

The CDF's mission is to provide knowledge and assistance through scientific research and complementary action to ensure the conservation of the environment and biodiversity in the Galapagos Archipelago. Volunteer opportunities include: Environmental Education at the Centro de Educación Ambiental (CEA); sea lion monitoring; English classes to the staff; annual science fair; and summer camp program (February - mornings).

Foundation providing conservation education programs for local residents

This foundation is dedicated to the conservation of the Galapagos Islands by empowering local residents through educational programs and environmental projects. Volunteer opportunities include: English classes for children, teenagers and adults; environmental Education for children.

Galapagos National Park

Volunteer opportunities include working with: Environmental Education Department; Department of Natural Resources; introduced plants control; interpretation at Galapaguera; English classes to the staff; eradication and planting program.

Volunteers work as a pediatrics and outpatient clinic assistant.

Introduced species control

Volunteer opportunities include: monitoring of introduced species; teaching English classes to the staff; assisting a veterinarian; assisting with occasional sterilization campaigns; stray dog capture and re-homing.
